Liza Schor is certified and trained in the science of nursing and the practice of psychotherapy. For the past 20 years, she has used her training to treat, prevent and diagnose mental illness. She has worked with many children, adolescents and young adult facing a wide range of mental and behavioral challenges. She has practiced in a number of settings the psychiatric department at the University of Maryland in Baltimore on the child inpatient unit, child day psychiatric programs and outpatient ambulatory clinic doing individual therapy, family therapy and group therapy. Her specialties include ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorders,) parenting training, trauma, anxiety, behavioral disturbance, anger management and post traumatic stress disorder. Her family work has centered around fostering family strengths and attachments that heal the family system. She has extensive experience working with LGBTQIA+ youth.
Ms. Schor sees education as a source of healing and power. She teaches new skills to cope with illness and change behavior and provides psycho-education about diagnosis, accessing resources and, in some cases, how medication can help augment the work already being done in therapy. She has been teaching young people and their families for many years, as well as training other professionals in the psychiatric community. She has taught family therapy at the Graduate School of Nursing at the University of Maryland. She has also served as a preceptor to nurses, social workers and psychiatric physicians completing their child psychiatry fellowship. She regularly teams with other professionals including education specialists and teachers, physicians, nutritionists, occupational therapists and the department of juvenile justice. Collaborating with and referring to other others in the field of pediatrics and adolescent medicine can only enhance the therapeutic experience and best support the child and family.
Neuroplasticity of the brain is the way the brain changes throughout life. Ms. Schor uses talk therapy to help retrain the brain and the nervous system. She does this though talk therapy, psycho education, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness based strategies. CBT is a problem focused and action oriented treatment which is used to treat a wide range of conditions. Mindfulness based strategies helps alleviate and prevent mental disorders and provide relief from distressing emotions and thoughts. She is trained in TF-CBT, trauma focused cognitive behavior therapy for the treatment of trauma.
Ms.Schor is also a parent, an artist, a writer, a music lover, a dog lover, an athlete and a terrible cook. She loves to read and has a great value for curiosity, humor and creativity.
In her 20 years of working with youth, she has found that a warm, non-judgmental attitude combined with evidence based practice is the best way to meet goals and create lasting change that fosters self-esteem and emotional well being not only for the early years but the years to come.
