What is a nurse psychotherapist?
A nurse psychotherapist works similarly to most therapists with the primary distinction of having integrated medical and mental health training across a number of settings. Nurse psychotherapists have an advanced practice degree in psychiatric nursing and are trained to assess, treat, and diagnose mental health conditions through the life span. Rooted in the nursing model, the nurse psychotherapist provides a holistic, patient-centered, strength-based approach that considers the patient’s overall physical and mental well-being, rather than focusing solely on the mental health symptoms in isolation. A nurse psychotherapist brings unique expertise in recognizing how physical health challenges, chronic illness, and life-changing diagnoses affect emotional well-being and family dynamics.
Therapeutic Approach and Techniques
Liza’s therapeutic approach is catered to each individual client and where they are on their journey. She is a trauma informed therapist who uses various individual psychotherapeutic models including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT,) trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT,) narrative therapy and internal family systems (IFS.) As a advanced practice nurse, Liza also provides extensive psychoeducation, educating patients and their families about diagnoses and treatment options. Her sessions often include the promotion of wellness through nutrition, exercise and mindfulness-based strategies. She regularly collaborates with schools, and other healthcare professionals, including physicians, social workers, and other therapists, to ensure cohesive and holistic patient care.
Philosophy and Approach
In her 20 years of working with youth and adults, she has found that a warm, non-judgmental attitude combined with evidence-based practice is the best way to meet goals and create lasting change that fosters self-esteem and emotional well-being not only for the early years but the years to come.
